Information about the social program

Offer of social event on December 2: three walks in Copenhagen.

All tours end at the Workers Museum, where a welcome reception takes place.

Tour 1. Carlsberg – The City and the Brewery: Cultural and Industrial Historical Traces in Copenhagen. Mette Vedsgaard Christensen, Docent, VIA University College

The Carlsberg Brewery was founded in 1847 and for 160 years was located on a “hill” just outside the city center. Today, the brewery’s former industrial site contains housing, offices, and educational institutions, but many of the historic buildings erected by the brewing family still stand.
On this walk, we will pass through the old industrial city and see some of the iconic buildings while learning about the many ways in which the Carlsberg family has left its mark on the cultural life of Copenhagen and Denmark.

The tour begins at Enghave Plads metro station at 5:00 PM

Tour 2: Poetic Dreams, Beat Poetry, and School Culture – In the Footsteps of Tove Ditlevsen and Dan Turèll on Vesterbro. By Kristine Hauer, External Lecturer, DPU, and Academic Consultant at NVL

Tove Ditlevsen came from the working-class neighborhood of Vesterbro and dreamed her way into the literary scene. Dan Turèll came from the suburbs and sought the vibrant life of the big city, often on Vesterbro. Both are well-known and beloved Danish authors of the 20th century, whom Danish students are often introduced to during their school years.

We meet at Enghave Plads by the metro station at 5:00 PM.

Tour 3The Modern Metropolis. By Torben Jelsbak, Associate Professor, University of Copenhagen

In the decades around 1900, Copenhagen developed into a modern metropolis. The city’s expansion took place particularly toward the west: City Hall Square became the new traffic hub, and the district of Vesterbro developed during the first half of the 20th century into the most densely populated of the new “bridge neighborhoods.”
This expansion is also thoroughly reflected in modern Danish literature, in the works of authors such as Emil Bønnelycke, Tom Kristensen, and later Tove Ditlevsen. On this city walk, we will trace this urban-historical development as both a mental journey and an existential experience of mobility, modernity, and expanded consciousness.

We begin at City Hall Square, in front of the steps to City Hall, at 5:00 PM.
