21 June, 8:00 – 19:00: Whole-day excursions to places in Jutland and beyond

Excursions are subject to a minimum of 25 participants and a maximum of 50 participants. Early booking is recommended.

Excursions are primarily reserved for conference participants; remaining places may be offered to external participants shortly before the conference.

Participants may register for one excursion only.


Tour A: World Heritage and Design Culture: Jelling, Kolding and Christiansfeld

A journey from Viking-age monuments to contemporary design, linking two UNESCO sites – Jelling and the Moravian town of Christiansfeld – with the restoration of Koldinghus, Olafur Eliasson’s sculptural Fjordenhus and the CLAY Museum of Ceramic Art. The excursion explores long-term continuities and new interpretations of heritage, architecture and material culture.


Price: 1,375.00 DKK. The price includes coach transport, guided tours and admission to Koldinghus Museum and CLAY Museum of Ceramic Art Denmark, as well as lunch and afternoon coffee/tea with cake.

Tour B: Art, Architecture and Experimentation in Denmark’s ‘Swinging Sixties’: Herning and Silkeborg

An exploration of the remarkable alliance between industry, art and architecture that shaped Herning’s cultural landscape in the 1960s. The tour includes works by Jørn Utzon, C.Th. Sørensen and Steven Holl, as well as Ingvar Cronhammar’s monumental Elia, before continuing to Asger Jorn’s milieu and Museum Jorn in Silkeborg.

Tour C: The Legacies of Utzon and Aalto: Modernism and Post-Industrial Transformation in Aalborg

A study of Aalborg’s transformation from industrial city to cultural hub, linking the redevelopment of former industrial sites such as Spritten and Nordkraft with modernist and contemporary landmarks including Jørn Utzon’s Utzon Center, Coop Himmelb(l)au’s House of Music and Alvar Aalto’s KUNSTEN Museum of Modern Art.

Tour D: Manorial Architecture, Monastic Landscapes and Medieval Urban Life: Randers and Djursland

Visits to three iconic Danish manor houses – Gammel Estrup, Clausholm and Rosenholm – exploring aristocratic architecture, landscape planning and estate culture from the Renaissance to the eighteenth century. The excursion also includes stops at medieval buildings and spolia in the historic town centre of Randers.

Tour E: Welfare State Planning and Brutalist Architecture in the Suburbs of Aarhus

A survey of institutions, housing estates and campuses tracing the architectural legacy of the Danish welfare state around Aarhus. The tour includes the historic psychiatric hospital at Risskov, student housing such as Børglum and Skjoldhøj, the large-scale estate of Gellerupparken and concludes at Moesgaard Museum by Henning Larsen Architects.

F.1: Royal Copenhagen: Two Centuries of Royal Planning and Building

A walk through Copenhagen’s royal quarters focusing on seventeenth- and eighteenth-century planned urban ensembles, where absolutist power shaped squares, axes and monumental civic architecture. Highlights include Charlottenborg Palace, Nyhavn, Amalienborg Palace, The Marble Church and Kastellet.

F.2: Carlsberg Recast: Industrial Heritage and Urban Transformation

An exploration of the former Carlsberg brewery and its transformation into a new urban district, examining the preservation of industrial heritage alongside contemporary housing, cultural institutions and public spaces in one of Copenhagen’s most ambitious redevelopment projects.

F.3: Activism and Collectivity in 20th-Century Copenhagen

A tour of cooperative housing, alternative communities and civic landscapes highlighting grassroots planning, social movements and collective spatial practices in modern Copenhagen. Highlights include Freetown Christiania, projects by Tegnestuen Vandkunsten and other experiments in collective living and urban activism.
